This interleague series features two talented yet inconsistent teams looking to gain ground in their respective playoff races. The Padres sit 8 games back of the final NL wild card spot while the Blue Jays hold a 2.5 game cushion for the third AL wild card position.

In the pitching matchup, Yu Darvish takes the mound for San Diego. The veteran right-hander has struggled with consistency this season, posting a 4.65 ERA through 17 starts. However, Darvish looked sharp last time out, allowing just 1 run over 6 innings against the Phillies. He’ll need to channel that success against a potent Blue Jays lineup.

For Toronto, Jose Berrios gets the nod. After a rocky start, Berrios has found his groove, delivering a stellar 2.61 ERA over his last 13 outings. The Blue Jays will rely on their All-Star to shut down a Padres offense that ranks in the bottom third of the majors in runs scored.

Both bullpens feature high-leverage arms but have been vulnerable at times this year. The Padres’ relief corps owns a 3.90 ERA while Toronto’s pen checks in at 3.69. With two capable but flawed staffs, expect some scoring opportunities on both sides.

In the end, I give the edge to the Blue Jays at home behind Berrios. The Padres’ lineup lacks firepower, especially with Fernando Tatis Jr. hobbled. Look for Toronto to bounce back and even the series behind a strong start from Berrios and just enough offense against the mercurial Darvish.

Our Pick: Blue Jays -115
